This analysis is correct, but incomplete. We have already addressed this from different angles\u2014the impact of these platforms on the    <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mallorcamedicalgroup.com\/blog\/opinion\/redes-sociales-un-impulso-o-un-peligro-para-la-cirugia-plastica\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision to undergo surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a broader reflection on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mallorcamedicalgroup.com\/blog\/opinion\/la-trampa-de-las-redes-sociales-107431\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the trap of social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  as a system designed to capture attention\u2014. However, there is a more recent, more specific, and, in our view, more dangerous phenomenon: the emergence of generative artificial intelligence and hyperrealistic filters as everyday tools for self-perception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re no longer talking about comparing one&#8217;s own face to that of a professional model, but rather comparing one&#8217;s own face to a version of oneself that has never existed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_%E2%80%9CI_want_to_look_like%E2%80%9D_to_%E2%80%9CI_want_to_look_like_my_filter%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From &#8220;I want to look like&#8221; to &#8220;I want to look like my filter&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past decade, clinical practice has documented a pattern known as \u201cSnapchat dysmorphia\u201d: patients who brought retouched photographs of celebrities to their appointments as a reference for their desired outcome. The phenomenon we are now observing is different in nature, not just in intensity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today&#8217;s beauty filters, powered by generative AI models, do more than just smooth the skin or brighten the face. They reconstruct bone structure, symmetrize features, narrow the bridge of the nose, project the chin, and redefine the cervicomentonian angle in real time\u2014so subtly that the user no longer perceives the image as \u201cedited\u201d and begins to perceive it as their own reflection. The clinical implication is clear: patients do not seek to look like someone else, but rather to resemble an algorithmically generated version of themselves, with facial geometry that in many cases is anatomically inconsistent or cannot be safely achieved through surgery.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This raises a different issue than the one addressed by classic studies on social comparison on social media. But the medical-aesthetic sector plays an active role it cannot shirk: every clinic that posts content on social media decides whether to retouch its results, whether to use those same filters in its posts, or whether, on the contrary, to choose to show the actual progression without digital alteration. This decision, which may seem like a marketing choice, has direct clinical consequences, because it either reinforces or corrects the very same distorted standard that patients later bring with them to the clinic.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A plastic surgeon\u2019s credibility should not be based on the ability to produce viral content, but rather on the traceability of their results, their accredited training, and their documented surgical volume. The proliferation of AI-generated beauty standards only reinforces the need for patients to distinguish between digital popularity and actual qualifications. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_a_patient_can_do_before_their_first_appointment\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a patient can do before their first appointment<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of this new situation, we recommend three specific steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Compare the reference image with your own unfiltered photos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, under neutral lighting conditions, to consciously identify which elements are real and which are digitally generated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ask the surgeon explicitly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whether the desired proportion or feature is anatomically feasible, and ask for an explanation based on your own bone and tissue structure, not on comparisons of images.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be wary of any promise of results that match a digital image<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014including those from the clinic itself\u2014if they are based on retouched photographs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate over social media and plastic surgery can no longer be framed in the same terms as it was a decade ago. Generative artificial intelligence has shifted the issue from social comparison to the active distortion of self-perception, and this calls for a structured clinical response, not just a general ethical reflection.
