What is a facelift?

The facelift repositions facial and cervical tissues to improve flaccidity and signs of aging of the face and neck.

What to expect after surgery

• Inflammation, tightness and localized bruising.
• Temporary numbness in some areas.
• Temporary compressive bandage (chin guard).

Home care

• Use compressive garment/bandage day and night for the first 15 days.
• Sleep in a semi-sitting position and avoid sudden neck movements.
• Careful hygiene: wash wounds and hair daily with soap and water, apply sterile gauze between incisions and chin guard.
• After 15 days, apply plenty of sterile petroleum jelly over the incisions after washing.
• Attending scheduled check-ups.

Drug treatment

• Combined analgesia although there is usually no pain.
• Prophylactic antibiotic.
• Gastric protection.
• Antithrombotic prophylaxis after evaluation with the Caprini Scale, if appropriate.

What to avoid

• Intense exercise for 4-6 weeks.
• Direct sun exposure.
• Tobacco in early recovery phase (at least 20 days).

Approximate recovery schedule

• Week 1: visible inflammation and clinical control.
• Week 3-4: more natural appearance.
• Month 6-10: consolidated result.
• Month 12-18: final maturation of the incisions.

Warning signs

• Progressive unilateral inflammation.
• Severe pain, fever or abnormal discharge.
