Correction of dark circles under the eyes

We understand by dark circles, (idiopathic hyperchromia of the orbital ring), the dark appearance around the eyes.

The appearance of dark circles can be due to various reasons of a different nature, such as:

  • Increased skin pigmentation in the orbicular area
  • Ethnic reasons
  • Excessive thinning of the dermis
  • Inflammatory reactions such as dermatitis
  • Allergic reactions (Dennie Morgan’s sign due to scratching) or contact that increase superficial vascularization or congestion
  • Dermatological processes that cause alteration in the basal layer of the epidermis (thickening) (lichen planus, lupus erythematosus), or iatrogenic caused by the injection of hyaluronic acid (Tyndall effect).

The presence of a darker coloration in the eye area may or may not be associated with other phenomena such as eye bags, which is corrected by lower eyelid surgery or lower blepharoplasty or excess skin on the lower and upper eyelids.

There are different ways to approach dark circles according to their cause

Those dark circles with irritative causes or related to systemic or dermatological pathologies must be assessed by the specialists of each disease and thus take into account the underlying disease. From there you can assess the treatment of the appearance of dark circles.

In terms of appearance, dark circles can be easily treated by applying makeup. In this way the color is homogenized and the problem is solved momentarily. If the affected person is comfortable with this solution, it is not necessary to think about any type of treatment

For those patients who want definitive solutions for dark circles that do not require making incisions in the area to be treated:

  • Intradermal injection of emulsified fat or nano fat
  • Laser Single or hybrid

Although the application of hyaluronic acid has been described, we advise against this method of treatment.

Intradermal injection of emulsified fat or nanofat

It consists of extracting a small amount of fat from some area of the body through liposuction, processing the fat in the form of an emulsion and reinjecting this texture into the skin of the eyelids.

We also know that if we add growth factors, particularly LPRF , to the grafted fat, the viability of this fat increases.

The permanence of the injected fat is precisely one of the inconveniences that we must take into account before undergoing this procedure, since part of the fat may disappear during the postoperative period.

In any case, the regenerative capacities of both the fat and the incorporated growth factors make us benefit both from the volume, provided to the grafted area, and from the quality of the skin.

Some bruises may appear both in the area where the fat is obtained and in the area where it is applied, although they are rare and variable from person to person.

Some change in the color of the applied area over several weeks and some swelling is to be expected. Over time, this edema settles.

The final result can be seen 2 months after the intervention. If the patient wants a greater facial volume after 3 months and there are enough fat deposits in his body, the procedure can be done again to increase it.

LASER

If the coloration of the skin is due to the accumulation of melanin in the skin and/or there is thickening of the same, lasers can be an alternative treatment, either in a single frequency or combining frequencies. In addition, these treatments can be complemented with the injection of nanofat.

The laser produces a disintegration of the melanin responsible for the dark color so that the body itself is responsible for eliminating it. In addition, laser light has a regenerative effect on the affected skin. In those cases in which the skin is thickened, a laser is applied that produces a refinement of the excessive skin layers.

These treatments can be combined with L-PRF in order to enhance the action of the laser.

The combination of these two treatments improve the quality and time of correction of dark circles.

Treatments are performed locally and on an outpatient basis.

The price of each treatment is given after the consultation with Dr. García Ceballos and depends on the characteristics and specific needs of each patient.

During the consultation you will be able to see before and after photos of cases similar to yours.

If you are travelling or consulting us from anywhere in Spain, the UK or Europe you can request your consultation online via Skype.

It is advisable to seek the advice of a specialist in reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery for this type of treatment.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions

Dark circles can be corrected by using laser, hyaluronic acid, nanofat, either individually or in combination with each other, or with surgical procedures such as lower blepharoplasty.

Depending on the cause of the dark circles, the most effective treatment may be the injection of nanofat, the laser or hyaluronic acid, and the most common is the combination of treatments.

The results of filling the dark circles are appreciated immediately, although their settling may take a few weeks.

The price of the correction of dark circles will depend on the procedure(s) indicated.

The duration of hyaluronic acid in dark circles is approximately 5 months, although it can be extended more depending on each individual.

Medical specialist in the treatment of the periocular region is the plastic surgeon.
