Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the shape, size or function of the nose. It can be performed with aesthetic objectives (improving the appearance of the nose), functional (correcting respiratory problems such as deviated septum) or both simultaneously (rhinoseptoplasty).

Open vs. closed rhinoplasty: which one does Dr. García Ceballos choose?
Dr. García Ceballos determines the most appropriate technique in each case:
- Closed rhinoplasty (endonasal): all incisions are made inside the nose. It leaves no visible scar. Ideal for moderate corrections.
- Open rhinoplasty: a small incision is added at the columella (base of the nose). It offers greater visibility and surgical control for complex cases. The scar is practically imperceptible.
In most cases, we opt for the closed technique or with minimal incisions, hence our motto: rhinoplasty without visible scars.

Our protocol for non-resident patients includes:

RECOVERY
How is the recovery of a rhinoplasty?
Week 1: use of nasal splint, normal swelling and periorbital bruising. Relative rest. No blowing the nose.
Week 2: the splint is removed. Inflammation is significantly reduced. Many patients return to work.
Month 1-3: residual edema continues to gradually reduce. The nose already looks very close to the final result.
Month 6-12: definitive result. Cartilage and bone structures are completely remodeled.
Return to intense physical activity is allowed after 6-8 weeks. The use of glasses over the nose should be avoided for 3-6 months.

It is important to operate in a hospital that offers safety guarantees in which intensive care is available to be able to deal with any unforeseen event that may occur during the operation after surgery.
Before surgery, I verify that you are in good condition and mark your nose with a skin marker.
As the rhinoplasty operation can vary in terms of the areas of the nose to be corrected, the surgical time is equally variable. A rhinoplasty usually lasts about two and a half hours, although it can take longer or be performed more quickly.
The accepted opinion in the scientific literature regarding the use of ultrasound in rhinoplasty is that it improves postoperative pain, edema and bruising.

The postoperative period after rhinoplasty is not painful. In fact, the initial sensation after waking up is usually pleasant and with an ability to breathe even better than the one you had before falling asleep.
In part, this is due to the fact that I do not use nasal packing. Instead, I use other techniques that are a little more laborious and produce less discomfort after the operation.
You will have a plastic splint over your nose to secure the tissues for a week. During the first hours after the operation, it is possible that some blood may drip from the nose. This is common and that is why I usually apply a gauze as a “moustache” to collect these drops and do not bother you.
As the hours go by you will notice that your nose becomes congested as if you have a cold. This will progressively disappear over the next few days.
During your stay in the hospital, which is usually one night, you will be able to get out of bed and walk around the floor where you are. Some patients prefer to spend the night at home, which is perfectly valid.
As I said before, the postoperative period of a rhinoplasty is not painful, which is why you will be able to stay at home during the following week taking the usual painkillers.
First week after your operation
During the period following your discharge from the hospital you will have a splint on your nose. It is normal to have some bruising in the eyes, although they are not usually too important and tend to disappear within a week.
It is normal for the face to swell during this period. To avoid it, you will take some medications. It is advisable to sleep with two pillows during these days to prevent the swelling from increasing.
It is equally common for your nose to become stuffy during these days. You will need to put plenty of petroleum jelly in your nostrils to clear them of mucus and dried blood. The more petroleum jelly you apply, the cleaner your nose will be on the day of your check-up and the easier the cure will be.
The day of your first checkup

These procedures are not painful. It is also not necessary to remove any stitches from your nose.
From this moment on, it is recommended that you continue with the medication as you received it the day you were admitted to the hospital and also apply Vaseline inside your nostrils.
After the first review
From the point of view of your activity, it is advisable to walk every day. If you have to expose yourself to the public you have to keep in mind that you will be wearing a splint on your nose and this may make you feel uncomfortable. Likewise, if you have to study or perform any activity that requires maximum concentration, you will be affected for a few days after the operation, so you may not have one hundred percent of your faculties. The same applies if you have to work telematically. You should not engage in high-intensity exercise, such as running or cycling.
Otherwise you can lead a normal life. It is important for you to know that breathing after rhinoplasty increases exponentially during the first seven days and experiences a slow progressive decrease over the next 12 months.
