What is ultrasonic rhinoplasty

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty -also called piezoelectric rhinoplasty or piezo rhinoplasty- is an advanced variant of nasal surgery in which conventional instruments (chisel and hammer) are replaced by a piezoelectric scalpel that emits ultrasound vibrations. These vibrations make it possible to cut and shape the nasal bone with a millimetric precision impossible to achieve with manual tools.

The key differential is the selectivity of the ultrasound: it acts on the bone tissue without damaging the surrounding soft tissues (skin, mucosa, vessels, nerves). The result is a postoperative period with less inflammation, less ecchymosis and a more comfortable recovery for the patient.

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty vs. classic rhinoplasty

Conventional technique

Classic rhinoplasty

  • Chisel and hammer for osteotomies
  • Increased soft tissue trauma
  • More pronounced edema and ecchymosis
  • Slower recovery
  • Accuracy dependent on manual dexterity

Advantages and ideal cases

Millimeter accuracy

The piezoelectric scalpel allows osteotomies and remodeling of the osseous dorsum to be performed with a level of control impossible with manual instruments. The surgeon works exactly where he needs to, with no margin for inaccuracy.

Respect for soft tissues

The ultrasonic vibrations act selectively on the bone. Skin, nasal mucosa, blood vessels and peripheral nerves are not affected, reducing surgical collateral damage.

Less inflammation

By minimizing soft tissue trauma, postoperative edema is significantly less. The patient appreciates the results sooner and the immediate postoperative period is more bearable.

Less ecchymosis

Reduced vascular damage during osteotomy results in less periorbicular bruising. Many ultrasonic rhinoplasty patients have barely noticeable ecchymosis at 5-7 days.

Faster recovery

The combination of less edema and less ecchymosis allows the patient to resume his social and professional life sooner, with greater comfort during the postoperative period.

More predictable results

The high precision of the piezoelectric instrumentation, combined with the surgeon's experience, allows the result to be planned and executed with greater accuracy, especially in complex corrections.

Cases for which it is especially indicated

Clinical Case Why you benefit from the ultrasonic technique
Correction of pronounced bony nasal humpPrecise reshaping of the bony dorsum without trauma to the skin or mucosa.
Complex bone asymmetriesMillimetric control of each osteotomy to correct lateral differences
Wide bony dorsum noseMore precise and controlled lateral osteotomies to narrow dorsum
Secondary rhinoplasty (revision)Previous scar tissue requires greater precision and less added trauma.
Patients with thin skinLess edema reduces the risk of swelling temporarily deforming the result.

The process step by step

  • 01

    Consultation and planning

First appointment for 40 € with Dr. García Ceballos. Complete assessment: photographs, analysis of bone and cartilage morphology, nasal function and patient expectations. 3D simulation of the expected result in consultation. For patients outside Mallorca, prior consultation by video call.

  • 02

    Preoperative study

Complete blood work, electrocardiogram, consultation with anesthesiologist. Written preparation instructions. Dr. Garcia Ceballos determines in this phase if ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the most appropriate technique for the particular case, or if it should be combined with conventional instruments for cartilaginous parts.

  • 03

    Surgery with piezoelectric instruments

Intervention under general anesthesia in Hospital Quirónsalud Palmaplanas or Son Verí. The piezoelectric scalpel is used for osteotomies and bone dorsal remodeling. The cartilaginous parts (tip, columella) are worked with standard technique. Dr. Garcia Ceballos personally operates each case.

  • 04

    Postoperative and follow-up

Placement of nasal splint (7-10 days). Ecchymosis generally less and of shorter duration than in classic technique. Hospital discharge in 24 hours or outpatient. Revisions at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 12 months. Follow-up by video call available for patients not residing in Mallorca.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a surgical technique that uses a piezoelectric scalpel to cut and reshape the nasal bone using ultrasound vibrations. It acts with millimeter precision exclusively on the bone tissue, without affecting the surrounding skin, mucosa, vessels or nerves, which reduces trauma, edema and postoperative ecchymosis.
Classic rhinoplasty uses chisel and hammer for osteotomies (cuts in the nasal bone), which can cause greater trauma to adjacent soft tissues. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty uses a high-precision piezoelectric scalpel that works selectively on the bone without damaging vessels or nerves, with less inflammation and faster recovery. Both techniques are performed under general anesthesia and have similar durations.
It is especially useful in: correction of pronounced bony nasal hump, complex bony asymmetries, noses with wide bony dorsum, secondary rhinoplasties (revisions where previous scar tissue requires greater precision) and patients with thin skin in whom it is important to minimize edema.
On the contrary. By reducing surgical trauma, patients often report a more comfortable postoperative period than with the classic technique. Less pain, less swelling and less bruising characterize the recovery from ultrasonic rhinoplasty.
The nasal splint is removed after 7-10 days. Periorbicular ecchymosis is less than in the conventional technique and usually disappears sooner. Most patients return to sedentary work in 10-14 days. Intense physical exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
After 3 months the result is already very noticeable, especially thanks to the minor edema that characterizes this technique. The definitive result, with all the tissues completely matured, is consolidated between 12 and 15 months.
The final estimate is always given after an individualized medical evaluation with Dr. García Ceballos. The first consultation has a cost of 40 €. Financing is not available. The cost varies according to the complexity of the case and the combination of techniques required.
Yes. Dr. Garcia Ceballos is able to combine piezoelectric technology for bone work with the principles of his Duvet Rhinoplasty technique for soft tissue management. This combination maximizes precision in the bony component and minimizes trauma to the soft component, providing the best possible postoperative outcome.
