01 — What Is Mentoplasty?

The chin: the key feature of the facial profile

The chin is one of the features that most define the profile. A receding (hypoplastic) chin makes the nose appear more prominent, visually shortens the neck, and softens the jawline. Conversely, an excessively prominent chin can throw facial proportions out of balance. Chin augmentation corrects both extremes to harmonize the profile.

Dr. García Ceballos performs both chin augmentation using implants (a simpler, outpatient procedure) and bone genioplasty via sliding osteotomy (an advanced technique that allows for repositioning along three axes), choosing the appropriate technique based on the specific case.

Ideal candidates

Patients with a hypoplastic chin (retrusive chin), excessive chin projection, chin asymmetries, or cervical-mental imbalances. Mentoplasty is often combined with rhinoplasty (rhinomentoplasty) to harmonize the overall facial profile.

02 — Mentoplasty Techniques

A technique for every situation

Genioplasty by sliding osteotomy

Advanced bone surgery that reposition the chin using a mandibular osteotomy. It allows the chin to be moved forward, downward, or laterally. It is indicated for complex cases, asymmetries, or when movement along multiple axes is required.

Chin Reduction

When the chin protrudes excessively, a controlled bone reduction is performed through an intraoral approach. This technique is less common than augmentation.

Rhinoplasty

A combination of rhinoplasty and mentoplasty performed during the same surgical procedure. Recommended when an imbalance in the facial profile affects both features. This approach takes advantage of general anesthesia and ensures a harmonious result.

Cephalometry and 3D Planning

During the consultation, a cephalometric analysis of the facial profile is performed to determine the optimal amount of projection. In cases of complex bony genioplasty, 3D planning is used beforehand to define the osteotomies with submillimeter precision.

03 - Recovery

Week by Week After Mentoplasty

  • D1-3

    Vendaje compresivo

Discharge on the same day (prosthesis) or the following day (genioplasty). Compression bandage for 48–72 hours. Soft foods. Prophylactic antibiotics. Moderate facial swelling.

  • D7-10

    Removal of sutures

Removal of intraoral (or absorbable) sutures. Inflammation subsiding. Partial return to social settings.

  • S2-3

    Social Reintegration

Minimal residual inflammation. Gradual return to a normal diet. Full social reintegration.

  • M1-2

    Clear result

Clearly visible results. In bone genioplasty, internal healing continues (6–8 weeks).

  • M3-6

    Final result

    Definitive and stable results. Permanent.

FAQ — Chin Augmentation in Mallorca

The prosthesis adds volume to the chin using a silicone or Porex implant. Genioplasty repositions the bone itself using a sliding mandibular osteotomy: it allows for movement along three axes (advancement, depression, and lateralization) and is the advanced technique used for complex cases.
No. Both techniques are performed intraorally (through the mucosa of the lower lip), so there are no external scars.
It is a possible but rare complication with modern protocols (prophylactic antibiotics, sterile technique, oral antiseptic). If it occurs, the prosthesis can be removed and reimplanted months later after complete healing.
The final quote is provided following an individualized medical evaluation. The initial consultation costs 40 €. Second opinions for patients who underwent surgery outside of Mallorca Medical Group cost 120 €. We do not offer financing.
Yes. Rhinomentoplasty (rhinoplasty + mentoplasty) is a very common combination because a hypoplastic chin makes the nose appear more prominent. Combining the two creates a more harmonious facial profile.
There is a risk of transient paresthesia of the mental nerve, which in most cases resolves completely within weeks to months. Permanent paresthesia is rare when the technique is performed properly.
10–14 days for a full return to normal social activities. Facial swelling is the main limitation during the first 7–10 days.
25 years of experience in facial surgery, training at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS I) and in Belgium (FCCP), expertise in both prosthetic mentoplasty and bone genioplasty, often combined with rhinoplasty.
