What does not change after cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery can modify a specific feature. It does not change a person’s identity, nor does it turn a consultation into a guaranteed result. At Mallorca Medical Group, Dr. José Ignacio García Ceballos, MD, FCCP and MRCS I England, with 25 years of clinical practice, dedicates part of the assessment to explaining what remains the same after the intervention.

That conversation avoids two common mistakes. The first is expecting a life change based on an anatomical change. The second is assuming that scarring, swelling, or residual asymmetry will disappear completely. Neither is a realistic clinical goal.

The feature is modified; the person is not

A rhinoplasty can reduce a hump or refine a tip. A blepharoplasty can remove excess eyelid skin. An otoplasty can bring a prominent ear closer to the skull. In all three cases, the rest of the face, the voice, the expression, and the way one recognizes oneself remain those of that person.

That is why the criterion of naturalness is not a slogan. It is a technical limit: the change must be read as a variation of one’s own face or body, not as an external model. Facial surgery in Mallorca is planned within that framework, based on photographs, measurements, and what the patient describes as a discomfort, not as a copied ideal.

What swelling hides at the beginning

In the first few weeks, what is seen is not the result. It is edema, bruising, and skin that has not yet adapted to the new volume. In the nose, the bridge and the tip take months to define. In the eyelid, swelling can temporarily alter the palpebral fissure. In the ear, the bandage and sleeping position condition the first impression.

That timeframe is not shortened with promises. It is explained in the consultation, with an indicative calendar and the warning that each tissue responds differently. Anyone comparing day 10 with a photograph from one year later is comparing two moments that are not equivalent.

The scar does not disappear

Every incision leaves a scar. What changes is its location, its length, and how it matures. In otoplasty, the scar usually remains in the post-auricular crease. In upper blepharoplasty, it follows the eyelid fold. In closed rhinoplasty, the internal incisions are not visible from the outside, but the operated tissue continues to heal on the inside.

The quality of that scar depends on the technique, the suture tension, and factors that the surgeon does not control: tendency toward hypertrophic scarring, smoking, early sun exposure, or infection. Saying that a surgery is “scarless” is not a clinical description. It is an omission.

Initial asymmetry partially remains

No face or chest is symmetrical before surgery. Surgery can reduce a visible difference. It does not manufacture two identical halves. In the nose, the nostrils, openings, and septum start from different bases. In the breasts, the volume, the position of the fold, and the shape of the lower pole rarely match to the millimeter.

An honest goal is to bring the asymmetry into a range that no longer draws attention, not to erase it. Anyone asking to “equalize completely” needs to hear, before booking the operating room, that such a request cannot be fulfilled.

Breathing, skin, and age follow their course

A cosmetic rhinoplasty does not guarantee better ventilation. If there is a deviated septum or valve collapse, that is assessed separately and, when appropriate, treated in the same procedure. If there is no functional indication, surgery for shape should not be sold as a respiratory solution. The rhinoplasty in Mallorca page separates both levels precisely for that reason.

Aging does not stop either. A blepharoplasty does not prevent the eyelid skin from losing elasticity again over the years. A facelift does not freeze the face. The result is a new starting point, not a permanent state. The Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) reminds us that these procedures have indications, limits, and a risk profile that must be explained before deciding.

What is decided during the assessment

What does not change is, in part, what allows for a good decision. During the consultation, medical history, medication, expectations, and photographs are reviewed. If the requested change is not consistent with the available tissue, the correct response is not to operate or to propose a narrower goal. That refusal is part of the medical act, not a lost opportunity.

Dr. García Ceballos, registered 070707779, MRCS I England and FCCP, works in Palma de Mallorca with this order: indication, technique, and recovery, before any image of the result. The first consultation is not free. It serves to see if surgery makes sense in that specific case.
