Plastic Surgery: Dressing Perception
Perception of clothing in plastic surgery
The public perception of scrub colors and styles has become relevant in the field of plastic surgery. A recent study, published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in June 2024, investigates how different scrub colors and styles influence the public’s perception of the qualities of plastic surgeons.
Study Methods
A survey was conducted through the MTurk platform, where participants were asked to rate images of surgeons wearing scrubs of different colors: black, navy blue, blue and green. In addition, traditional and adjusted scrubs were evaluated. Respondents rated characteristics such as representativeness, skill, confidence, knowledge and compassion using a Likert scale. Analysis of variance and one-tailed t-tests were used to analyze differences in grade point averages.
Results
A total of 562 responses were collected. The results indicated that:
– Plastic surgeons: Navy and blue scrubs were perceived as superior to black scrubs in terms of skill, representativeness, confidence, and compassion (P < 0.05).
– Plastic surgeons: Navy and blue scrubs were also perceived as superior to black scrubs in knowledge, skill, representativeness, confidence, and compassion (P < 0.05).
– In terms of ability and representativeness, navy blue was superior to green (P < 0.05).
– In terms of representativeness, blue was superior to green (P < 0.05).
– For trust and compassion, green was superior to black (P < 0.05).
– Adjusted scrubs were significantly preferred (P < 0.05) in all characteristics except representativeness for the subgroup of male plastic surgeons.
Conclusions
Black scrubs are associated with more negative characteristics compared to navy blue or blue scrubs, which were the highest rated. In addition, tight scrubs were associated with positive characteristics for both male and female surgeons. Therefore, investing in lean scrubs can be beneficial in improving the patient-physician relationship.
