Correction of dark circles under the eyes

We define dark circles under the eyes(idiopathic hyperchromia of the orbital ring) as the dark appearance around the eyes.

Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by various factors of different kinds, such as:

  • Increased skin pigmentation around the eyes
  • Razones étnicas
  • Excessive thinning of the dermis
  • Inflammatory reactions of the dermatitis type
  • Allergic(Dennie Morgan’sscratch sign ) or contact reactions that increase superficial vascularization or congestion
  • Dermatological conditions that cause changes in the basal layer of the epidermis (thickening) (lichen planus, lupus erythematosus), or iatrogenic conditions caused by hyaluronic acid injections(Tyndall effect).

Darker pigmentation around the eyes may or may not be associated with other conditions, such as under-eye bags—whichare corrected by lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty)—or excess skin on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Correction of dark circles under the eyes

There are different ways to treat dark circles under the eyes, depending on their cause.

Dark circles under the eyes that are caused by irritation or are related to systemic or dermatological conditions should be evaluated by specialists in the respective fields, and the underlying condition should be taken into account. Based on that assessment, treatment for the appearance of dark circles under the eyes can be determined.

In terms of appearance, dark circles under the eyes can be easily concealed with makeup. This evens out the skin tone and temporarily resolves the problem. If the person affected is comfortable with this solution, there is no need to consider any other type of treatment.

For patients who want permanent solutions for dark circles under the eyes that do not require incisions in the treatment area:

  • Intradermal injection of emulsified fat or nano fat.
  • A single or hybrid laser (using different wavelengths) or a combination of both.

Although the use of hyaluronic acid is described, we advise against this type of treatment.

Intradermal injection of emulsified fat or nanofat

It involves extracting a small amount of fat from a specific area of the body using liposuction, processing the fat into an emulsion, and reinjecting this mixture into the skin of the eyelids.

We also know that if we add growth factors, particularly LPRF, to the grafted fat, the viability of that fat increases.

It is precisely the permanence of the injected fat that is one of the disadvantages we must be aware of before undergoing this procedure, since part of the fat may disappear during the postoperative period.

In any case, the regenerative properties of both the fat and the growth factors used mean that we benefit from both the volume added to the grafted area and the quality of the skin.

Some bruises may appear both in the area where the fat is harvested and in the area where it is injected, although they are rare and vary from person to person.

Expect some discoloration in the treated area for several weeks, as well as some swelling. Over time, this swelling will subside.

The final results are visible 2 months after the procedure. If the patient wishes to have more facial volume after 3 months and there are sufficient fat deposits in the patient’s body, the procedure can be performed again to increase it.

LASER

If the skin discoloration is caused by the accumulation of melanin in the skin and/or there is thickening of the skin, lasers can be an alternative treatment, either using a single frequency or a combination of frequencies. In addition, these treatments can be supplemented with nanofat injections.

The laser breaks down the melanin responsible for the dark color, allowing the body to eliminate it on its own. In addition, laser light has a regenerative effect on the affected skin. In cases where the skin is thickened, a laser is used to thin out the excess layers of skin.

These treatments can be combined with L-PRF to enhance the laser’s effectiveness.

La combinación de estos dos tratamientos mejoran la calidad y el tiempo de corrección de las ojeras.

Treatments are performed locally and on an outpatient basis.

The price of each treatment is given after the consultation with Dr. García Ceballos and depends on the characteristics and specific needs of each patient.

During the consultation you will be able to see before and after photos of cases similar to yours.

If you are travelling or consulting us from anywhere in Spain, the UK or Europe you can request your consultation online via Skype.

It is advisable to seek the advice of a specialist in reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery for this type of treatment.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

Dark circles under the eyes can be treated using lasers, hyaluronic acid, or nanofat—either individually or in combination with one another—or through surgical procedures such as lower blepharoplasty.

Depending on the cause of the dark circles, the most effective treatment may be an injection of nanogreas, laser therapy, or hyaluronic acid—and most commonly, a combination of these treatments.

The results of the treatment for dark circles under the eyes are visible immediately, although it may take a few weeks for them to settle.

The cost of treatment for dark circles under the eyes will depend on the procedure(s) recommended.

Hyaluronic acid typically lasts about 5 months for dark circles, although the duration may be longer depending on the individual.

The results of nanofat treatment for dark circles under the eyes are permanent, although it is possible that the treatment may need to be repeated after the initial settling period—which usually occurs after one year—until the desired results are achieved permanently.

Hyaluronic acid treatment for dark circles under the eyes corrects certain types of discoloration under the eyes as well as the pronounced infraorbital furrow. Eye bags, if not too pronounced, can be reduced with hyaluronic acid.

The plastic surgeon specializes in the treatment of the periocular region.

The effects of hyaluronic acid on dark circles are visible immediately.

The laser is effective for dark circles under the eyes where pigmentation is the predominant factor.
