What does rhinoplasty consist of?

Rhinoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure aimed at improving the shape, size and/or function of the nose. It can be performed for aesthetic, functional or combined purposes.

What to expect after surgery

  • Swelling of the nose and eyelids, with possible periocular hematoma.
  • Nasal congestion and sensation of pressure.
  • Slight nasal bleeding in the first 24-48 hours.
  • Pain is very unlikely.

Home care

  • Keep splint and dressings without wetting or removal for 10 days.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated (two pillows).
  • Apply cold to the periorbital area with a clean cloth between the cold and the skin for the first two days.

Drug treatment

In general (unless specifically indicated by a physician), the postoperative period may include:

  • Apply plenty of sterile petroleum jelly to the threshold of the nostrils with a swab 3 times a day.
  • Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in decreasing doses during the first week.
  • Combined analgesia if necessary.
  • Prophylactic antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Gastric protection.
  • Antithrombotic prophylaxis indicated after individual evaluation by Caprini Scale, if appropriate.

The schedule, duration and type of medication are determined on an individual basis by the medical team.

What to avoid

  • Nose blowing and nasal efforts.
  • Intense exercise for 3-4 weeks.
  • Direct sun exposure and intense heat.
  • Support glasses on the nasal dorsum until medical authorization.
  • Tobacco and alcohol in the initial phase of recovery (minimum 20 days).

Approximate recovery schedule

  • Day 1-7: more visible swelling and bruising.
  • Around 10 days: removal of splint and/or stitches if necessary.
  • Month 1: more natural appearance and marked decrease in edema.
  • Months 6-18: definitive result. It depends on the skin type of each patient. Thicker skins take longer to settle.

Warning signs

  • Intense pain that does not subside.
  • Heavy or persistent bleeding.
  • Fever (> 38ºC).
  • Progressive asymmetric inflammation.
